Among the news are virtual folders and services for social networks.
Nepomuk framework makes it possible to categorize or “tag” their files. The tags can then use the search feature to create virtual folders. For example, you can use the photo program digiKam to tag photos of yourself and then create a virtual folder that contains only these precise images. Nepomuk is the result of an international EU-funded research project.
KDE 4.4 is also introduces Akonadi, a central database, for example an address book, which will make it easier for programs to share information. More programs will gradually be converted to use the new storage engine.
We can also find some new programs that are added. Blogilo is a program for bloggers which makes it possible to edit and publish posts to your blog. KDE 4.4 also comes with a preview of a new skin for netbooks – Plasma Netbook. An interface that is perfect for smaller screens.
The number of improvements in this new version are several thousands. Since KDE 4.3, they have fixed 7293 bugs and implemented 1433 new features.
KDE is licensed under LGPL which makes it possible to use the code in both open and closed solutions. KDE 4.4 is available for a variety of platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux, BSD and Solaris. KDE 4.4 will be found in the Linux distributions this spring. Amongst them is Ubuntu 10.04, Fedora 13 and OpenSuse 11.3.
