Microsoft has opened up the webservice Office Web Apps that is made to compete with Google Apps.

Microsoft announced on Monday that the company has now opened up the web service Office Web Apps to the public. Office Web Apps makes it possible to create and edit documents in Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote directly from your browser.

The service supports creation of entirely new documents directly in your browser, or uploading existing documents that also can be edited in the browser. Documents stored on the Office Web Apps can then be shared with other users.

Office Web Apps is free and all you need to use the service is an account with a Microsoft Live ID. The service works with all major browsers and platforms.
