Google is doing it’s best to combat fragmentation of the Android world, and has now updated their buildt in Gmail app.

When you buy a new Android phone, it already has a series of built-in Google services. But when it comes to important updates, many built-in apps has not been updated before the next version of the Android system has been updated.

Google Maps constantly updates through the Android Market instead of using updates from Android, and now Gmail has finally done the same. This is to reduce fragmentation between different versions of the system. See more details on The Official Gmail Blog.

The only downside is that the update is only available for version 2.2 (Froyo), which is currently the latest version. Download the updated Gmail app from Android Market by clicking here with your phone’s browser, or scan the QR code below.
