Sony is expected to introduce a web-based music and video service, which will challenge Apple’s iTunes, this week.

Sony will announce a new innovation to challenge iTunes at the IFA Consumer Electronics Unlimited in Berlin, which starts tomorrow. Sony has revealed plans to introduce an online based music and video service with content from major film and music giants. It is rumoured that 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, NBC Universal, Paramount, Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros will be offering content to the service.

According to the Finacial Times, Sony will make the service, called Qriocity, available to customers using web connected devices, such as PlayStation consoles, Walkman music players, Vaio computers, Bravia televisions, Blu-ray players and Sony Ericsson phones.

Qriocity is expected to be available as a subscription service on PSP and PlayStation 3 next year. The service is intended to replace the service Connect, which is no longer active.

After the initial release it will be gradually supported by other online connected platforms. The price of the service is still unknown.
