Facebook’s success reached new heights during last year, and 2010 became the year when they passed Google as the most visited website in the U.S. According to the research company Hitwise, the word “facebook” also became the most common search term in the past year.
“This is the second year that the social networking website has been the top search term overall, accounting for 2.11 percent of all searches. Four variations of the term “facebook” were among the top 10 terms and accounted for 3.48 percent of searches overall.” says Hitwise in its study.
From January to November last year Facebook accounted for up to 8.93 percent of all traffic in the U.S. Google slipped down to second place from the previous year and accounted for 7.19 percent, followed by Yahoo! Mail (3.52 percent), Yahoo! (3.30 percent) and YouTube (2.65 percent).
Although Google has been the most visited website in the U.S. in recent years, Facebook started to catch up with the search giant during the summer of last year. Already in August, the research company Comscore reported that U.S. users were spending more time on Facebook than on Google.
