Social services are very much in the news at the moment. Google has recently introduced their Facebook competitor Google+, and the project has been received with great interest, but Facebook still has the upper hand with more than 750 million users worldwide.

The micro blog service Twitter has now published some new statistics, and according to these, it is now being sent 200 million Twitter messages (Tweets) each day, compared with 2 million two years ago, and 65 million a year ago.

According to Twitter, these are the top Trending Topics for the first half of 2011, divided into the two most popular categories:
