In connection with the world’s largest game conference gamescom, in Cologne, Germany, the Norwegian game developer Funcom, picked the press conference of Electronic Arts to announce a release date for their next online game: The Secret World.

No exact date was announced, but the game will be released in April 2012. In addition, Funcom will open the beta registration on August 26. The official website is now counting down to the registration.

“It has never been more rewarding working on ‘The Secret World’ than it is now,” says Senior Producer and Creative Director Ragnar Tørnquist. “The progress we are making in development allows the whole team to really enjoy just playing the game for hours on end. We are all looking forward to bringing in players through upcoming betas, and their feedback will be crucial to the further development of the game as we progress toward the April, 2012 launch.”

According to the press release, Funcom will use an unique, interactive, social media campaign to recruit beta testers for the game. More details will be made available on www.thesecretworld.com.

The Secret World offers a gameplay of tales and myths mixed with a reality of a giant conspiracy, where secret societies controls the world like puppeters.

“In a world where every conspiracy theory, every myth, fable and urban legend is true, three ancient societies pull the strings and decide our fate. Forced into alliance by circumstance, they stand united against the rising darkness, but remain divided in pursuit of power.”

Funcom was also the company behind two other online role-playing games, Anarchy Online (2001) and Age of Conan (2008). Age of Conan was recently released in a free version.
