At this time every year Facebook release a list of the most shared links among the 800 million users of the social network. This year’s list covers the first eleven months and consists of the 40 most shared links in the U.S.

We recently looked at the most shared articles in the US on Facebook over the past year. The stories range from cute to thought provoking and represent the type of news people have been sharing and discovering with friends in 2011.

In first place we find an article from The New York Times that shows photos of Japan before and after the tsunami disaster on March 11 this year. Facebook does, however, not mention how many times each link has been shared.

Top 10 most shared links during the year are as follows:

1. Satellite Photos of Japan, Before and After the Quake and Tsunami (New York Times)

2. What teachers really want to tell parents (CNN)

3. No, your zodiac sign hasn’t changed (CNN)
