Nokia is introducing their new maps app, called Here Maps for the iOS platform as an alternative to Apple’s own Maps. Here Maps has been available for iOS before, but the app was fairly unstable and Nokia never updated it during the time it was available. Late last year Nokia removed it from the App Store due to poor compatibility with iOS 7.

The app is already available for Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone. However, the top spots in the map app market for iOS and Android currently belong to Google and Apple, and now Nokia wants to make a comback.

According to Nokia executive, Sean Fernback, the Finnish tech giant will release the apps before the end of the year.

“I’m convinced people are looking for alternatives,” Mr. Fernback said. “Google Maps is a good solution for many, their maps work very well, but it has looked the same and done the same for a long time.”

Here Maps has always had a pretty unique feature. Maps can be downloaded and be used offline for free including support for navigation. Google Maps recently added support for offline usage, but with less extensive features.
